I have a few pages with recipes. I'd like the pictures to be arranged in a gallery (even, uniform and organized pictures) and I'd like each picture to link back to its recipe post. I seem to be unable to figure out how to create links within each separate picture in the gallery.

By default, Wordpress and almost wordpress themes doesn't support link images from gallery to a custom link - as you can see here
So, with this case, I recommend you using Recipe Index Shortcode.
