I am wondering if it's possible to add the post excerpt to the overlay homepage layout. Currently, it does not work despite unchecking "remove post excerpt" in "Other Layout Options" customization. It displays the post title and the "line above post excerpt" but not the excerpt itself. Is this a bug or just not intended to work out of the box?

Yeah, this layout doesn't supports for display excerpt - we've showing on our demos like that also.
We will consider to add supports for excerpt on this layout in the future updates.
