What is the ideal image size that I should use when importing images to my gallery? I am particularly interested in the size for the featured image and post images (both horizontal and vertical). If I import a "master" size, does the program resize it throughout the program for use in different instances? If that's the case, then I think it's the 1170px width and 780px height. Is that correct?

Hi,
Yeah, the theme will auto crop/resize your images when you upload to make it display good with all places in your site.
If you use horizontal images size, you can use images with 1170x780px
If you use vertical images size, you can use images with 1170x1584 px
