I have the same problem that I can't import demo. I don't find the Customizer file and I don't have the option "Administration > PenNews > Import demo data"
Please the demo import link is not showing under Appearance. I have already installed and activated the demo importer plugin

Please try edit home page then remove PenNews Featured slider shortcode and re-add PenNews Featured Slider as screenshort http://prntscr.com/md1d3p
If it still not work, please send me your website management information( admin url site, username and password ). I will check it help you.
