Image Optimization for Photography Blog

    I am using the Soledad theme/Penci gallery to create a photography focused blog. So far, the theme has been great and I very happy to be using it! I am proficient in Adobe Photoshop and want to insure my images appear in the Soledad theme at there very best.

    Question #1: My original images exported from Photoshop are 1920 x 1280 px in size. When the Soledad theme creates the 1170px wide version in needs, does it crop (from the center) the original 1920px version I provided or does it resize it? I am trying to understand if it is cropped so that elements of the image are removed, or resized to it just smaller version of the original.

    Question #2: When the various image sizes that the Soledad them requires such as the 1170x663px, 780x516px, 585x390px, etc image sizes are created, are there any optimization operations performed on the photo to that could impact the quality of the image?

    Question #3: I have read that Wordpress itself will compress images using a default of 80 unless this line is added to the functions.php file:

    add_filter('jpeg_quality', function($arg){return 100;});

    I plan to only upload fully optimized images to begin with, and do not want to have any other compression performed on the jpegs (other than auto resize/cropping required by the theme). Will I need to add the line above to insure that the soledad/wordpress does not perform any further compression/optimization to the image?

    Question #4: Are they any other tips you might provide to insure my images look their very best when using the Soledad theme with the included Penci Gallery?

    Thanks for the help and the great theme!

    Hi,

    Thank you for loving our theme.

    1/ Yeah, of course - all premium WordPress theme has this feature. We need to crop images to make sure it will display fit for all spaces on your site. Most of customers use images with different size & some customers upload images with the size about 40MB - We can't display origin images like that because it will make the site very slow for load.

    2/ Cropped images is a feature from WordPress itself. That's the way WordPress optimize the images. If you want to change that sizes, It's much customization to do. So, I recommend you keep it and use it display as a part of origin images ( It just for preview )

    3/ No - By default Wordpress doesn't compress images 80%. It's 100% by from itself. So, you don't need to add more that code.

    4/ I can recommend you use "Masonry Gallery" to display your images in the gallery without the crop images.

    You can check more on this video tutorial for know how to use gallery come from Soledad.

    Best Regards,
