I just switched my translation plugin from WPML to TranslatePress.
Since doing this in some instances (not all which is what makes it so strange) featured image shows as blank on the front end and is not populating the image as it should.
When you click to view the image in a new tab it shows "penci-holder.png" image.
This happens on the post page but also on the home page, category page, archive page etc.
Everything displays correctly when viewed in the backend post preview and when viewing the website while logged into Word Press.
