The link above will take you to a category on my site where you can see the problem in action. I also include the link inline:

    https://www.eviscerati.org/comics/pc/

This is actually a problem with most of the categories on my site, it's just this one is small so easy to use.

    Summary:

The category is a webcomic. I use the Category Top Posts section to display the five most recent comics, in descending order (so the large image is always the most recent comic published). The main category list (below the top posts) displays the comics in ascending order, starting with the first comic ever posted and continuing in order by date.

The purpose of this is to allow someone who wants to view the latest comic (or the last few recent) to click on a comic at the top of the page, and then the main category list can be used as a proper comic archive in chronological order.

The problem I'm running into is that if you go to the bottom of the list on the first page and click the "3" pager link to go to page 3, PenNews generates a 404 page not found error. I _think_ this is happening because the pager is generating a list of all posts in the category, but the category is _excluding_ theĀ  posts that are being displayed at the top of the page, and the archive is just the right size so that only those excluded posts would display on the last page. I suspect it does this to prevent the same posts from showing up twice when the category is configured to display posts in the default descending order.

I guess I need to find a way to either prevent the category from excluding posts if its displaying in ascending order, or to get the pager to recognize that posts are being excluded and not include those excluded pages at the end.

I definitely need the category to display in ascending order because the chronology of the posts is important. Displaying in reverse order would be counter intuitive to anyone trying to determine how to start at the beginning.

    Hi,

I've checked your site, the problem is that you've entered the wrong category base at Settings > Permalinks >

Category base. I've reset it to the default WordPress.

If you want to remove the category slug, please install the No Category Base (WPML) plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/no-category-base-wpml/

    Regards,
    PenciDesign.

Thank you for the update, and telling me about the No Category Base plugin. I've installed it and it appears to be working correctly -- however, I'm still getting the 404 error when I click the last page of the archive pager.

    Hi,

In this case, you should disable all the plugins related to the permalink, and URL, ... and then check again.

    Regards,
    PenciDesign.

It appears to be the ascending posts plugin. Looks like I'm stuck with the behavior.

    Thanks for looking into it.
