High Server Load and bad TTFB on Pagespeed Insights

    Hi dear Penci-Design-Team.

After a relatively long period of absence from Soledad as our theme, we returned a few weeks ago. The reason for the departure was an incredibly high server load, which was obviously caused by the “Penci Shortcodes & Performance” plugin.

Back then, we turned everything upside down to rule out other possibilities. In the end it was clear that the server was sometimes completely overloaded even with the smallest saves in the Theme Options Panel.

I have to say that we are definitely not hosting on a cheap server.

It's been a while since we left. Almost two years. During this time we relied on a simple performance-oriented theme, which was always a real challenge to squeeze into the corset of a magazine.

We had enough of that at the end of the year. Since we absolutely appreciated Soledad's possibilities at all times, we took courage in December and reinstated Soledad.

A lot of things have really developed really well in the theme since we left. But unfortunately we discovered that Soledad is still eating up an almost unpleasant base load on the server, and sometimes reaches peaks that sometimes completely paralyze the server (for minutes).

I dug through a few support entries in the forum. And it seems as if we are not entirely alone in this misery. There are probably other users who report very similar things.

Of course we also tried everything possible. With cache - without cache. All plugins have been disabled. Also those of Soledad. Switched on individually to see where there is a particular problem.

What has emerged (then and now) is that the “Penci Shortcodes & Performance” plugin, as soon as it is activated, puts enormous strain on the server. The fact that we are not completely wrong with this assumption can be easily determined using the Google Pagespeed Insights tests. As long as the plugin is active, the server's initial reaction during the test will be criticized.

If we turn off all plugins (except this one), the server fails the test. If this plugin is also switched off, the values are completely fine. If we leave this plugin switched off but activate all other plugins again, the server easily passes the test.

So it doesn't seem to be the case that various plugins are fighting with each other, as the Shortcodes+Performance plugin causes these values on its own.

However - Of course, I can't rule out the possibility that we missed something very specific. It could also be that caching rules are blocking some Javascript snippet that is urgently needed. Or server specifications need to be adjusted.

In any case, from this point on we are relatively at a loss.

I am happy to offer a tech login for Wordpress.

Are these issues already being addressed in some way? Are there any ideas on how to equalize this base load within the plugin?

    Best regards

    Torsten

    Thank you very much,

I am regenerating thumbnails right now. This process may take a while. Maybe half hour. Meanwhile I am out of house. But you are allowed to fee yourself comfortable within the dashboard, while I'm gone. 😇

Thank you very much in advance!

    Hello there,

I found out that the problem is actually not with the theme. The TTFB (time to first byte) is related to the display of a script from the ad inserter plugin. There's something going on there.

At this point I will contact our ad host and the plugin developer of the ad plugin.

The error had essentially masked itself. In this way, all visible traces led to the Soledad control plugin.

Sometimes it's just like a game of cat and mouse.

So my request is officially ticked off here! 😇

However, I still have a question about captions below the post image on Wordpress sites. So not in articles. Because there is already the option in the panel to display captions for the cover photo.

Is there any way to also display captions under the featured image of pages? Because that's where we place the copyright of the images.

Kind regards - and a thousand thanks for your patience!

    Hi,

Please go to Appearance → Customize → Single Posts → General → turn on the "Enable Caption on Featured Image" option.

    Hi thanks,

this works fine for single posts. I already did this right after switching to Soledad. But I am searching for a solution to show up Captions under Festured Images of Pages.

Is there a way (maybe with cutom css) to make this possible?

    Best regards

    Hi,

The problem is that the page doesn't support showing the image caption, so the CSS solution doesn't work in this case.

We'll add an option in the future theme update.

    PenciDesign.

    Hi,

it'really sad, that wordpress still has no in-build feature to support copyright informations. If you really thinking of adding such an option (page-featured-image-caption) within one of your next updates, this would be unbelievable helpful for a lot of siteowners. As I know, that I am definitely not the only one, who uses this little space for copyright infos.

Again, thank you very much for your patience with me. There might be a few questions in the future, which I would like to throw into this board. Meanwhile I wish you all the best!

    And thank you.

    Warmest regards
