I am facing an issue with the social sharing icons on my website. The email/share icon in the social share section is not working properly for some users. On my system it opens correctly, but on other systems clicking the mail icon either does nothing or redirects incorrectly instead of giving email options (such as Gmail or the default mail app).
Could you please check whether this is a theme issue or a compatibility issue with the social share functionality?
The email share icon uses the default mailto: function from the browser/system. Because of this, the behavior can vary depending on the user's browser settings, installed mail applications, or whether a default email client is configured on their device.
On systems without a configured mail app, clicking the icon may do nothing or redirect incorrectly. This is usually related to browser or OS configuration rather than the theme itself.
We checked the theme functionality and the social share button is working correctly on our side. We recommend affected users check:
Their default email application settings
Browser permissions and mail handler settings
Whether Gmail or another mail service is configured as the default handler
Please also try testing with a different browser to compare the behavior.
I understand that the email share icon uses the default mailto functionality, but the issue is affecting users who do not have a default email application configured. I tested this from another user/system as well and encountered the same problem.
It is not practical to ask every website visitor to manually configure browser or system mail settings. From a user experience perspective, visitors should be able to click the email share option and proceed without additional setup.
Could you please suggest a theme-level solution or alternative approach that works consistently for all users instead of depending on individual browser or OS mail configurations?
Please note that Soledad is a WordPress theme only. It is not a mail application and cannot check, manage, or modify the default email application or operating system settings on a visitor’s device.
The email share button works using the standard browser mailto: protocol. Because of browser and OS security/privacy limitations, no website or WordPress theme can force users to open a specific email application such as Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, or others.
The behavior always depends on the user’s browser configuration and whether they have configured a default mail handler on their system.
Thank you for the clarification. I understand that the email share button uses the default browser/system mailto functionality and its behavior depends on the user's browser and email application settings.
I just wanted to confirm whether there is any alternative method or customization available within the theme to open a web-based email option (such as Gmail compose) instead of relying on the system's default mail client.
